2 Bumps

Newborns && Breastfeeding

Is it normal for newborns to nurse for 5, maybe 10min at a time? My baby who will be 4 days old today will nurse for 5 min then burp and be done. 5 min seem to satisfy baby until about 45min to an hr. I don't mind feeding on demand just wonder if its normal. Yesterday she had 7 wet diapers and 3 bowel movements. Also, I do feel letdown when she eats.

  • It's normal. As long as she's having at least 6 wet diapers a day and gains weight.

  • If she is satisfied and has 6/8 wet diapers, then, everything is A ok. It also matters if she is consistently gaining some weight. She will pick up though...you may be back questioning if eating nonstop for hours is normal..and it is, so is eating every five minutes. Never look at the clock, only at how many diapers she has. Sometimes, she may not seem satisfied, it doesn't mean she needs formula or anything..it's just what babies do.

  • On demand feedings...definitely normal. Especially for a growing newborn wanting to put on the weight. Sometimes one side at a time helps too with the time frames.

  • Thanks moms. She usually nurses 5 to 10 minutes and then is done until next feeding. So far she has never nursed on both breast during one feeding.

  • You and she are doing great. Keep it up. My almost 7 month old has never nursed from both sides.

  • She will nurse longer as she gets older and her stomach grows. My dd didn't start nursing for more than 20 minutes until she was over a month old, and didn't start nursing from both breasts until she was over 2 months old.

  • As long as diaper count is good she is getting plenty. :o) She may or may not eat for longer periods when she gets older. Some babies are just really good at getting milk out. She doesn't have to nurse from both breast at each feeding, many babies don't. My 6 month old only eats from one breast at a feeding. All I can think is LUCKY! I love to cuddle my son, but there are times I would love for him to nurse for 5-10 min and be full.
