What activities or classes work best for a 3 0r 4 year old?

I'm looking into enrolling my 3 1/2 year old twins in some sort of class or sport this summer or fall, but I don't know which ones are most age appropriate. They have gymnastics at daycare, and they love that. I highly recommend gymnastics to anyone that asks, but I want to give them the opportunity to try something else too.

I've been looking at dance and gymnastics classes available for their age, and I am finding tumbling, trampoline, bars & beam, mini-trampoline, cheerleading, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, and various combinations of these.... Then there's martial arts classes, t-ball, and soccer.... So, my head is spinning!

I may or may not enroll them in the same thing, but I won't enroll them in any more than one additional activity each.  Which of these activities are most suited to 3 1/2 to 4 year old boys and girls? Are there some we should avoid at this age?  Any thoughts as to whether I should put them in the same thing or let them each try something different?

  • My kids play soccer and swim. They have been playing soccer since they were 4 and swimming since they were 8 months old. I personally don't like T-ball because it is very slow and boring, although that is just me. My DD did dance for a coupld years although she didn't start that until she was 5, if they like dance ballet is great for that age. I would not start tap or jazz until they are little older and I believe our studio here doesn't start those until they are a little older.

When my kids were this age I let them try one sport each season, except summer and that way they could try many things and see what they like. Now that they are older they also take art lessons and music lessons.

    Good Luck!

  • We tried a variety of things to see what was liked/not liked. Almost every place offers a free trial class.

soccer - my sons asthma didn't agree w/ it
young chefs academy - became a problem due to food allergies
gymboree classes - LOVED but very expensive
ballet - my kids have both been in it since about 18mos old.
tap - my kids have both been in it since about 2 3/4 years old
hip hop - my son started at 5 1/2
swimming - we do that every summer and it's always a fun class for little ones!
gymnastics - we do off/on when I have a little extra mad money
karate - my kids both tried around age 3 or 3 1/2 and LOVED LOVED LOVED but decided to stick with dance instead

    good luck!!

  • Thanks! I had not even thought about music. I will likely sign them up for swimming this summer too if I can find a place that will take them before they turn 4, since that won't be until the end of the summer.
