why does toddler walk on tiptoes next day has pain and won't walk

2 1/2 yr old walks on tiptoes alot. It seems when he does this the next day he is in pain in his hip or leg or foot and refuses to walk. It is real pain. Last time it was left leg that lasted a couple weeks then went away. This time right leg. He also limps and cries when this is going on. Dr. had no answer even after xrays. Anyone else experienced this?
