How to handle Tooth Terror?

My daughter who is 5 discovered tonight that she has her first loose tooth!! Only problem is that she has always been scared of the dentist ever since she first went there when she was 2. So now anything related to her teeth, she thinks she has to go to the dentist for. She is also terrified that losing her tooth will hurt badly. She won't even eat or drink anything she is so scared!! What can I tell her to calm her down?

  • My daughter was the same way when it came to a loose tooth, always afraid it was going to hurt. Daddy is the official tooth puller in the family and what he did was check it every day until he knew it would come out real easy, when it was time for the tooth to come out he would pretend he was just checking it and pop it out real quick. It was done in matter of seconds, it didn't hurt and after that she was fine.

  • There are lots of picture books on the market for this. Go to the library or book store and let her pick a couple out.

  • If she has older siblings/cousins/friends who have lost teeth they could talk to her about it.
