Road Trips and Preschoolers

Has anyone taken a road trip with a preschooler? We won't be driving straight through we'll be making lots of stops to see the sights. Going from Washington state to California. Is a road trip a bad idea?

  • We travel a lot since my husband is in the military so my kids are used to being in the car for long periods of time...We have the DVD players and keep coloring books and games in the car. We try to stop at least every few hours for a bathroom break/food/ and to stretch our legs. Take lots of snacks and if your trip has long stretches of road with not much to stop at you may want to take a portable potty just in case you need to make an emergency stop on the side of the road *unless you have a boy...they can just pee on a you can also play games with having them watch for certain colored cars or count the semi trucks. My kids play a game called "bingo" that they got from my neighbor kids...they say bingo everytime they see a yellow vehichle...since yellow really stand out its an easy one to spot. have fun and dont stress to much!

  • We drive from Virginia to Maine and back every 6 months. We have been doing this since our daughter's were 1 and 3. We don't stop. We only stop for gas and pee breaks. It takes 16 hours. We always drive at night so they sleep through most of it. The 3-4 hours they are awake are not bad. We bring pop tarts and such for breakfast in the car and play kids songs.

  • As long as you know you'll have to take plenty of stops, plack plenty of snacks. Take a dvd player if they're into that. Take toys. Let them get out and stretch their legs. You'll be fine. GL and have fun!

  • As long as you have plenty for your child to do, it's not a bad idea. We have taken many many car trips, long ones with our son, he is now 4, from the time he was 6 mos old til now and we have never had a bad car trip. Just make sure you have juice, snacks, things age appropriate to do. It wouldn't hurt to get a tray that hooks to the car seat where he/she could look at books, color or whatever else they may want to do. Good luck!
