Tics in children

Anyone have a child who has some sort of a tic? When did it start? Do you think it has a cause that is stress-related? Did you find any solutions?

  • It is stress-related... sometimes.

Sometimes, it's an indication of too much or not enough calcium.

Good food, good sleep, good stress-coping skills... they'd all help.

  • My daughter had a tic, she used to blick way to much every time she was excited. It lasted for a couple of yers- I think from 6 to 8-9 . We ignored it as well. She's 12 now- no tics.

  • My son had them on and off for years. A weird mouth thing, then it changed to a jumping thing, a shoulder shrug, etc... They were mild. I don't think anyone else noticed. We ignored it. At 15, they are all gone. He has ADD and I think that had to do with it.

  • My ds has had a couple, they were caused by a medication he was taking. He still has a vocal tic (he clears his throat). The others (eye blinking, a jerking motion with his arm) have gone away.

  • My brother has one and he's 16. His is physical, its stress related.

My husband scratches when he's nervous.

  • Thank you all, it sounds like its fairly common and can clear up with age. One good thing -- at least I have a physical cue to when my daughter might be dealing with a lot of stress.
