Are you one catastrophy away from being broke?

I swear, I dont know where all the money goes. Husb. & I are lucky that we're both working, but it all goes out for bills. All it would take is one emergency (w/ the house) or a major injury or illness & we'd be screwed! How many of you are in the same boat?

  • We have a very large emergency fund and have been planning for retirement since we got married 18 years ago. So we have a lot of money put away and could weather a pretty big catastrophe.

  • We are kind of like that . But my DH is retire Army. So we have his retirement check to fall back on. Even though that will not pay all our bills. Our mortgage will be payed.

  • same here...except i stay at home...which hurts us a little, but dh isn't good with money (he grew up in a lifestyle that they could spend alot freely...thank god he's learned it already, bc his parents seem to always be hurting for money..but that's also because his dad refuses to work for more than short periods at a time), and he makes enough for me to stay at home. it's all his office expenses that are stressing us out..our bills have tripled since we've moved for his promotion. ugh..there is an end in sight though!

  • Yes, we're there, too. We're debt-free, which is HUGE. But our health insurance is weird (I'm a vet, so I get VA care only when they want to cover something, and DH's insurance is bizarre). We have renter's insurance and all of the other insurance we need, but I know if something that wasn't covered by insurance were to happen, we'd be totally screwed.

  • Depends on the emergency.

Last November my husband lost his job and we calculated that we could go about a year with just my income (about $100 a month) and him selling plasma.
