Their confidence will never be achieved at what it should be if the child doesn't recognize it themselves. Just as an addict will never truely be helped unless they truely want to be helped. However, you can try to encourage a boost in confidence by helping them see what is great about them. Praising a good grade, a nice piece of art work they created, a way they handled the situation. Complimenting them on things that are great about them, etc. Try not to do it in an obvious way, but at the very least give them that encouragement that they're great.
