Do you view women who took pain meds as weak?

SO, I am on the phone with my gf today and she says "I know you'll think I am weak for this but I just couldn't take the pain of labor".  Um, noooooooooooooooo.  That's not what I thought at all.  Then it got me thinking.  Is this a popular view?  I've had 3 children without any pain meds and am pregnant with number 4.  Do I think I am "stronger" than other moms who took pain meds?  No.  I think that I am strong period.  No comparison to anyone else.  What do you think?

  • I've had sever back labor with all 3 of my children (not to mention they were all born posterior)- all 3 were unmedicated. I don't view other women's choices as weak, I am not a candidate for an epidural because of my scoliosis. Can't have one, period.
I do feel that if most women were truly aware of the risk factors involved with narcotic pain management, or anesthesia (epidural), that they would opt for medication free births... Unfortunately, they are often fed inaccurate information, or flat our lied to.

  • Every person's tolerance to pain is different. While one may be able to tough through labor with out pain pills, some women find it unbearable. I say as long as the mom and baby are healthy, then that is ALL that matters.

  • absolutely not. ever seen the pain episode of mythbusters. some ppl have different tolerances than others and some women's labors are more painful than others. my labor was naturally painless. does that mean all women feel what i felt, no. i had a lucky labor, some women have unbearable labors. you're not weak for getting pain meds if you really don't want to be in pain that long

  • Not at all. I still felt pain with the pain meds, it just made them more tolerable. Everyone has a different tolerance for pain and it does not make them weak.

  • Not at all. I took the pain meds and with my second child I had hours of back labor that was horrific, I can't imagine not having had the pain meds!

  • No. Everyone is different. I don't think using pain meds makes one weak any more than not using them makes on stronger than anyone else.

  • I do admire those who do it "naturally". I am not sure if I'd call 'em stronger per se but I know I have pain issues and a low pain tolerance so .... yeah. lol.
