I make mine by draining the beans, adding enough chicken broth (or water/or combination) to cover the beans and the ham, a couple of minced garlic cloves, a sliced onion, and 2-3 large carrots peeled and sliced up. Then I add about a cup of tomato sauce. Let it cook all day. I do like the soup to thicken and not be watery, so if I'm home, I'll put the lid on tilted so that some of the moisture escapes and the broth thickens.
