  • First grade words are usually very simple. The focus should be on writing the letter sounds that they hear. You could break up the words by asking the child, what sound do you hear first?, middle?, and last?. This will help teach the child to break up the words and listen for the blends and letter sounds. As for sight words, they just have to be memorized the old fashioned way. Look at the words, say the word and spell the word, then cover up the word and try to spell it without looking. Repeat until you can spell it correctly.

  • Ours are: joke, woke, nose, hose, note, vote, splash, string, every, any
I just give her a practice quiz on Thursday night and we review on the way to school Friday morning. By the weeks end, she has learned which ever she had missed earlier in the week.

  • The goal is to teach your daughter how to study the words on her own. Tell her to look at the word,, say the word,  then hide the word and write it.  If she forgets how to spell a word, she can look at the word again and repeat the exercise. Let her do that five times for each word she doesn't know. Initially , you can help her with the process until she gets the hang of it. to  First-graders need constant repetition, so your daughter needs to that every day until the spelling test.  (Studying needs to start at the beginning of the week.)

This week your daughter will have to suffer the consequences of not studying.   Start anew with an encouraging and positive attitude next week.   www.filedby.com/author/linda_griffin/1127154/
