What would you serve if you were having people over for supper?

What do most people serve when having company over for supper? I'm looking for something that is both adult and kid friendly. Also, I live in Canada so b-b-q is out! Thanks for any suggestions!

  • I like to do:

An Italian veggie platter with Lasagna, Salad, Garlic Bread and dessert OR

Enchilada's Casserole style with salad, and spanish rice OR

Chicken Parmesan, Au Gratin Potatoes, Salad, and Garlic Bread OR

Meatball Sandwiches, Twice Baked Potatoes, and Salad OR

Chicken Divan with Steamed Rice, muffins or biscuits OR

Chili, Cornbread, Tortilla Chips, Salad, Veggie Platter

For desserts I either serve a nice bundt cake, cheesecake, pineapple upside down cake, or maybe a cookie platter with assorted cookies.

all are things I can make ahead.

  • I've done Italian - lasagne, spaghetti, salad, garlic bread

North African - crustless quiches, bastilla, harira (Moroccan wedding soup), cassolita (squash sauteed with onions, cinnamon and raisins.)

The Italian is a little more kid friendly, except in my house where the kids actually beg for the soup and quiche on a weekly basis.

  • I would probably make some sort of chicken (seeing as most everyone likes chicken), a vegetable such as asparagus or a mix of oven-roasted vegetables, and then some couscous, rice pilaf, or potatoes. I don't know how kid friendly that is, but my son would love it. :)

Or, you could make French Dips. Kids love to dip things, and those have Au jus.

  • How is bbq out? We bbq all year 'round --by pulling the bbq up to the nearest door. There is just something fun about bbq'ing in a winter coat and gloves in the dark.

I do tend to make whatever I feel like eating. I have broad taste and like to serve people things I find interesting. Usually alongside more familiar foods, so even if they don't like the unusual, there's usual fare to stave off starvation.

I like simple foods for home, and more elaborate for potlucks. Mostly 'cause if it's 'all me' I go simple, if it's sharing I don't need to.
