Would you let your 9 year old highlight their hair?

My DD turned 9 in November, she has been asking to high light her hair funky colors like blue or bright red. In the past I have always said NO, then this summer she became very sick and was in a coma for 11 days. At the time they couldn't even tell us if she would wake up or if she would be the same kid. since then she did get better and was doing great for 16 weeks.

On Thanksgiving she got sick again and was in the hospital for 3 weeks. We don't know why she is getting sick or when she will get sick again.

So today I let her add Bright Red high lights to her hair. I figure life is to short and it is just hair!

  • I have let my boys dye their hair their school colors (Purple and Gold), we used a semi-permanent and it washed out fairly quickly. I thought it was something fun for them, its just hair and grows back. My oldest dyes his hair during State Wrestling (the whole team does - they dye it Gold). While bleaching his hair isn't the best thing, it does grow back.
I of course would want them to tell me or ask me, depending on things going on in our life at the time, I mean I don't want purple hair during family pictures or something...but that's just me.

  • I'm also sorry about her health problems. I can understand you point, but don't let her manipulate you into things you wouldn't normally do.

  • No, but I did let my dd (same age as yours) get colored extensions that come out after a few weeks. She loved those!
