It's not that it really "helps with pcos" BUT it is generally recommended that you go on birth control for 1-3 cycles before starting fertility drugs because it helps to balance the hormones which are wildly out of wack in most PCOS women because testosterone is MUCH higher than it should be for a female.
My sister has PCOS and she wants to TTC right after her wedding this summer. Even though she can't really get pregnant on her own and substain a pregnancy without help the doctor put her on birth control because she wants her to regulate her cycles, get her testosterone under control, etc. and then she wants to put her on Clomid to see if that helps. If she doesn't get pregnant in a few cycles they are taking about starting hormone shots.
