  • folic acid is very important in early pregnancy to prevent birth defects like spinal bifida and other neural tube problems for the baby.

  • Great link, elizbr. It also helps to balance the homocysteine level, which plays a part in blood clotting (and some clotting disorders) and the health of the vascular system.
