What's your favourite book and what is your child's favourite book?

We've recently cleared our basement out and after many votes and re-votes from my children and nieces/nephews we've decided we want to turn it into a kid's/adult's book room, somewhere we can all enjoy. We've brought 15 full bookshelves (each with about 6 shelves on each) and plenty of armchairs, bean bags and cushions. We have enough books to fill about a quarter of the bookshelves and have plenty more space for books and more shelves if need be! So we've been going to secondhand stores and plenty of fairs to buy more books but we're looking for some special ones to buy. We can always get secondhand so the budget's well under control. It's already a massive hit with my dozens of nieces/nephews/cousins/children and we want to turn it into something special - it's also my new project!

So ideas on books??

  • I love Jane Austen's books, as well as George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (first book A Game of Thrones), as well as Orson Scott Card (his Ender series -- first book Ender's Game is great, and he's just published a new YA book, Pathfinder, that will be the first in a trilogy and that may have become my new favorite). My 3.5-yr-old loves anything to do with pirates (especially Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup) or babies (my favorite here is The Barefooted, Bad-Tempered Baby Brigade by Deborah Diesen). He also loves Harry Potter, that's a must for kids. :)

  • My favorite authors are Robert James Waller, W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear.
My oldest son love I Spy books and pretty much anything he can read now. (He's a first grader)
My youngest son and baby daughter love pretty much any book they can turn the pages in, so things like board looks or any book with a thicker page.
