elliptical or treadmill

I know I want to buy one or the other but I'm not sure which. I get really bad shinplints when I run on the road no matter what I do (made sure my form was right etc) but I can't help but think an elliptical feels awkward. Pros and cons of either

  • I prefer a treadmill because you can change up your workout, walking at a higher speed with no incline, walking slower with a steep incline (for your butt!), running, walking/running intervals, etc.... an elliptical is just the same thing.

  • I love the eliptical machine! I'd get one before a treadmill anyday.

  • I also get shin splints really easily which is why I love the elliptical. I does feel really weird at first but once you find your rhythm it's great. It took me a couple days but it really helps with the shin splints and I feel like i got a better workout.

  • well if you can't run than go with an elliptical. an elliptical will give you a full body work. a treadmill will only do you good if you can run on it. are you sure it's shin splints and not cramps...i'm pretty sure it's cramps cause shin splints are the muscle separating from the bone

  • It's shin splints, they have gotten so bad that it hurt to stand to make dinner. They get tender to the touch it really sucks cause I really like running since I quit smoking 5 months ago, it makes me feel powerful.

  • Its really up to you: both are great machines and will get the job done. If your joints are suffering from strain or just old age, and if you would like to exercise your upper body, the elliptical trainer is a good choice. If you are a walker, jogger or a runner you can’t go wrong with a treadmill.Good Luck!

  • TM- get yourself some compression socks. They help with the shin splints.
