Do you save the "heels" of your bread? and if so what do you do with them?

Nobody around here will eat the "heels" and so they get tossed out and I hate tossing out food so what are good uses for the "heels", can they be frozen for later use?

  • I make them into toast, or toss them outside - we also have tons of snow, but the birds still come eat it (or stray dogs do). Birds don't find all the insects & stuff they normally eat, so it helps them, especially if there is so much snow. You could freeze them, and when you have a bag full, make bread pudding. Croutons. Bread crumbs for coating or topping various things.

  • You could make your own bread crumbs but I just throw them in the backyard for the birds.

  • We eat them. My oldest son in particular loves them. If we didn't eat them, I would make bread crumbs or croutons with them.

  • we have 60 inches of snow on the ground...will the little critters/birds still come around for the crumbs?
or maybe freeze them all for the spring and then take them out to throw around for the little critters/birds to eat?

  • We save them for when we go to the park and feed the ducks. We also make our own breadcrumbs.
