Are you for a 5 year spending freeze?

WASHINGTON – A White House official says President Barack Obama will call for a five-year freeze in non-security, discretionary spending during his State of the Union address.

The official says the proposal will be part of the president's plans to reduce the deficit that he will outline in Tuesday's primetime address. The official says Obama will also call for lawmakers to back a five-year plan put forth by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to save $78 billion in defense spending.

Obama is under pressure from the public and lawmakers to cut spending. Several Republican lawmakers have proposed cutting $100 billion from Obama's budget for the current year.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the president's speech.

  • Cutting defense spending it's the democrat way! lol

Not impressed...I honestly don't see Obama able to get his spending addiction under control.IF he does probably just enough to try and be re-elected and then IF he gets re-elected he will suddenly OOPS fall off the wagon. We'd be in deep a@@ trouble if that man gets re-elected.

  • Yep, TN- that's how the political game is played. Pubs better find a candidate to nominate that can get elected by the moderates of this nation, or it will be 4 more years of PBO-

  • businessweek.com:"Setting up a conflict with lawmakers over what items to trim in the federal budget, his advisers have said the president will make the case for continued investment in education and infrastructure"

How is it an investment in education when we spend MORE per child than most other nations and are FAR LACKING in educational productivity?  Then ADD to it, Continued investment in infrastructure? Those turtles need new bridges?  That disc golf course needs new turf?  Or do the highways need more signs?

  • Grly - The US is admin happy..the paper trail that the legal eagles of this country mandate devours both time and money-that's why little ever gets accomplished. This country spends more time filling out forms and talking about what needs to be done rather than just getting to work and doing what needs to be done. It's no wonder the average abdominal girth and hip-hip measurement is growing.
