Crack a diamond?

I was looking at my pear solitare today and at the pointed end, it looks fractured. I can feel a crack but the rest looks internal.

Is there anything that you can do? And have you ever cracked a diamond?

  • Ohh, a personal fear of mine is cracking or loosing the diamonds on my ring. But I have put my ring throught the 'ringer' with 3.5 years working with horses and it's taken all the abuse shockingly well. Take your ring to a jeweler now before it gets worse or you loose the tip.

  • I didn't know diamonds could crack without special tools :S lol goes to show how much I know. I have never heard of that. Go to a jeweler and get a quote on how much it would cost to fix.

  • There is nothing you can do to fix it. That usually happens when there is a small flaw to begin with; I'd check your certification and see if it was noted. If not, you may be able to get a replacement.

  • It's pretty rare to crack a diamond. Like one of the PPs said, it will start with a flaw in the stone, or you have to hit it just perfectly, or both. I've only seen it happen once (my parents are both jewelers) and the customer had it recut into a heart.

  • Some places will replace your diamond. But it depends on where you got it.
