Taxes and child support

I live in Illinois. Will the state send me papers on how much I've recieved and will I have to pay taxes on it since it's additional income?

  • No, the payer of the child support pays the taxes on it as income.

  • You do not have to claim child support on your taxes. It'sfrom your ex's income, so he takes care of any taxes related to it.

  • Lol musicmom08, obviously you dont' pay anyone child support. Trust me, it is 100% taxable as earned income by the earner. Which means the earner is spending even more than the reciever sees on child support. Thus when people complain about getting so little, remember that the earner had to earn (depending on tax status) 20% more than what you get.

  • You shouldn't have to pay taxes on child support received.

  • "Child support is tax-free for federal income tax purposes, meaning neither the recipient spouse nor the child owes taxes on it."

  • Candi, if you read the article linked you'll see that both you and musicmom are correct.
