Racist behavior or just plain stupid?

A friend of mine is Asian-American. She's a college professor teaching in a relatively homogenous town. She was out picking up her lunch at a local Chinese retaurant, when a young man who was in the wait area had the following conversation with her..."Are you Chinese?" She said "no", then he proceeded to say "what are you?" She replied "american"...he then said "Is that why you English is so good?"- What would you have responded?

  • A friend of mine, whose mother is from Korea, would have responded in a very bad Korean accent "i not know what you talking about'.
I don't think the intent was racist, but it wasn't very bright of that individual.

  • I would have probably laughed and said 'that's right' as I walked away. Sounds like stupidity at it's finest =)

  • What an idiot. If it were me I probably would have just gave him a drity look and walked away. Some things don't even deserve a response
