How much TV is appropriate for an almost 3 year old?

My son will be three in May and we recently let him start watching a few age appropriate tv shows like handy manny the wiggles and thomas the train. How many shows a day is ok? I was thinking two? An hour a day tops and only on some days?

  • Thats a good amount. I always had those shows on for background noise and hope some knowledge seeped in, but at that age about an hour of pure t.v. is enough.

  • I think 2-4 favorite shows a day. wiggles, blues clues, etc. 2 watched alone (while you cook, rest, shower, etc) and 2 watching together while engaging in dialog. if it's a channel w/ commercials tape the show if possible so you can fast forward through commercials small kiddos don't need to see that junk. .... i prefer movies over tv personally for small children

  • Sounds good to me! My Son - 3 1/2 - has a few different fave shows that He watches, but they're all on History Channel, Discovery, A&E, NatGeo and SyFy. He watches about an hour and a half of TV a day, I'd say.

  • My daughter did not watch any TV until after her third birthday. Our rule has always been no more than one hour of screen time (TV and computer) on school nights, no more than two hours on other nights.
