  • i think its if he DOES see his shadow, spring is coming..if he DOESNT winter stays for 6 more weeks..or somethin like that

  • Long before there was Groundhogs day there was (and is still celebrated) Candlemas (and before that Imbolc). An old European Ryhme says:

    If Candlemas Day be fair and bright,
    Winter will have another fight.
    If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
    Winter won’t come again."

    A similar Scottish poem says:
    If Candlemas Day is bright and clear,
    There’ll be two winters in the year."

    Today we may use the day to rip a poor defenseless rodent from his warm bed, but it's always been a special day of prediction. And as you can see, even in ancient times a bright day denoted 6 extra weeks of winter...
