When is supposed to be ok to file taxes, if you're itemizing?

I keep hearing reports that say mid February, but I can never get an actual date. And what is the hold up this year, I know it's something about congress passing something, but what specifically?

  • I don't know an exact date, but the reason is because Congress didn't pass the 2010 tax act until late in December. Since they waited so late, it didn't give the IRS enough time to set everything into place to prepare for people to file earlier.

  • My CPA told us Feb 14. She has already taken all my paper work to fill out and save on her computer until she can hit send then.

  • You can file before then, but your tax return may not be processed until 2/14.
