I am not a book reader. My son is interested in Political Science and has requested some good books about campaigns, elections analysis, and political theories.

Does anyone have any suggestions, new or old books?
Thank you in advance for your responses.

  • Every Poli Sci major I have met (my son is PolySci major) has to read Plato's Republic. It seems to be THE source for discourse in how government works.

I read With God on Our Side, The rise of the Religious Right, which I thought was well done. Right now I am reading Your Government Failed You, slightly melodramatic but an interesting look at National Security.

Presidential memoirs are always an interesting read.

  • Michael Curtis wrote a series about political theory from the Greeks through modern times. They're really interesting. There is also "Political Philosophy: A Beginners' Guide for Students and Politicians" which is highly ranked but I haven't read. Maybe also have him search local colleges for the names of their Political Theory textbooks.

  • I second him reading Plato's Republic. I hated every second of reading it but it was worth it in the end.
