  • is he really irritable/cranky?

if not, then its probably normal. my pediatrician once told me that newborns can sometimes poop several times a day and then go days without a bowel movement. as long as theyre otherwise content, theyre likely not constipated.

  • It is normal for a newborn (formula fed or breast fed) to go up to 5-6 days without pooping.

If you are switching back and forth, it could very well be his formula. You should look into a different type.

  • I'd start by eliminating the formula and only nurse... a breastmilk baseline really will make a difference. Breastmilk is a natural laxative.

I think your sis is right, sorry.

If he's not in any discomfort, DO NOTHING... no putting things in his butt and especially no Karo.. it's a botulism risk. Just nurse him.

  • Do NOT give that baby water or juice. I fully agree with dropping the formula and breastfeeding more. If he's not uncomfortable he may not be truly constipated - it's normal for formula babies to not poop daily.

  • I recommend moving his legs in a bicycle motion, or folding his knees up toward his tummy. If that doesn't work, you can also try a warm bath..and if that doesn't work, you could drink some prune juice yourself, or put a very small amount of prune juice into the formula. My SIL has to put prune juice in her son's soy formula every time they make a bottle.

  • As long as he's happy don't worry about it. Newborns can either go a few times a day or go a few days between BMs. As long as the poop itself isn't "poop pebbles" it's totally fine.
