  • I think there is some real truth to it. I worked in a really hostile environment for a while. But when the new boss came in who was horrible, the group solidifed because we were all dealing with the same terrible boss. So in that instance... Yes the saying is true. Also in my younger (read - dumber) days, I actually became really good friends with the girl my boyfriend had cheated on me with after he had left her a year or two later (she had not known about me until after they had broken up). We had a common enemy at first, but then found out we had a lot in common.

  • I think that in certain circumstances it ranks right up there with 'keep your friends close ... and your enemies closer'. I wouldn't want to have to live that way, but it makes sense at times.
