Fentanyl transdermal patches are an excellent way to achieve extended relief from severe chronic pain. They are certainly not a first or even second line of pain relief. Because they are opiate based narcotics dependancy can be an issue. Generally, fentanyl patch use is reserved for those patients where pain relief long term is important to quality of life and addiction is less a factor. In hospice we use them often. I have also used them for long term chronic Huntingtons patients.
