  • We started with dipping things like carrots in ranch. It starts them on that type of motion for using a spoon. It is a messy process but worth it. Target has these dipping spoons that keep them from jamming it down there throat. mash potatos are a great start.

  • Mashed potatoes are a good starter food for spoons because they stick to the spoon easier. It just takes practice, patience and alot of paper towels. Just put them in the high chair and let them go at it. They'll get it eventually.

  • Try several different types of spoons...they all have their favorites..and let her fool around with them and finger foods. The more she is exposed to the spoons the more used to them and comfortable she will become.

  • I gave my daughter her own spoon at 11 mos. She didnt know how to use it but after watching us at the table - she always tried. To this day - she gets a fork and spoon at dinner and gets better with it every time! She does an excellent job now - lots less mess!

  • Give the child a spoon and food at meal times. Sit at the table with her and allow her to watch your use. She will soon begin to attempt to follow your behavior. It will surely be messy, but be patient it will only get better.
