How much, on average, does it cost to adopt?

  • Depends if you are doing in here in the states or want a child from outside the US.

  • Foster Adoption- little to nothing...typically always less than 5000.

    Private or Adoption agency domestic adoption 10-20 thousand (some are more, some are less)

    International 15-60 thousand depending on country, child and rules.

  • The price range is across the board; I've heard an average is $10,000 for a US adoption - and it can be quite a bit more for International adoptions. You really need to check with local adoption agencies, there are a lot of factors involved.

  • I have several friends who have adopted from China, and I think it cost about $20,000. Here in PA, adopting from foster care is free. It's like that in most states I believe.

  • It all depends on your preferences.

    Foster care adoption is close to free.
    Domestic Infant adoption varies depending on race (sad, but true). $20,000- $45,000 and sometimes higher.
    International is $20,000 and up depending on the country

  • We did a private adoption and it was about $6000. Going through an agency will be more, International adoptions start around $10,000.
