Am I the only one with kids who aren't labeled?

They aren't "gifted" , autistic, ODD,PDD,ADD ( although I'm sure if they were going to public school, they would be labeled ADD), learning disabled, advanced or anything else.

It just seems like EVERY kid has some kind of label and there is no such thing as a regular kid anymore!!

  • I dont have a lable for my kid...but what i dont understand is that some kids with lables (im not saying all familys,,i just know a couple personally) that get all the excuses..."oh well my johnny can hit your son because he has ..(insert lable here) ...or "oh suzy throws these things because she has issues with (insert lable here) ...while if MY son does it, its because he is bad and im not raising my son the right way ...i punish my son the way i see fit..i just dont appreciate others making excuses for their kids and trying to put my kid on the chopping block (persay...). I sure im gonna get some thumbs down..and its not everyone..just some personal experiences

  • I agree with you. My kids have been labeled as "gifted." When they go to choose courses or extra-curriculars, they are told things like "you're too smart to do that" or "you need to join x club because it looks good on a college application." I want my kids to do the things they like, not things they "should" do according to their labels.

  • Give me a break! Your kids are not the only kids that are not labeled.

Well I sure have a hard time finding ones that aren't!!! How many questions do you see right here on Cafemom that start with "My ADHD kid" or " My son has ODD". It just seems like an epidemic.

  • my daughter has autism
excuse for her actions, no not an excuse, a reason-yes
i would love to not have that label on her
i would love not to have autism in our lives at all, even a day without would be a blessing

your answer of...Gifted at Driving Mommy to the Nuthouse = good one

  • Not all children have labels, walk into a school. Majority of the population is not going to be labeled, and if they are, there's something wrong with the school district. ADD/ADHD are being diagnosed more because these children 25 years ago were thought of as the trouble makers, and cast aside by educators, or suspended regularly for behavior problems. Now professionals are realizing these children weren't bad, their parents weren't bad, there was a chemical imbalance occurring that no one noted. Look back even 50 years ago, mental retardation didn't exist. These poor individuals were labeled "insane" and subject to horrific "tests" and medications. They weren't insane, they had a disability that the professionals didn't understand. Now they know what it is and the number of people identified as having mental retardation has sky rocketed. Its not an epidemic, its a better understanding genetics, medicine and psychology.

  • ~*Wow*~... I read through your post, because my kids have no lables, than responses, and sorry your post was attacked... talk about rude.

I personally think kids are kids, and each one is different, and none of them fit into a mold... and I am highly against placing a lable on my kid so the school can recieve more federal aide!!! Or make a teacher's job easier!!! If myself, their doctor, dentist, and all those they come in contact with in life don't see the pretend issues a teacher sees, than find a profession where you are an actual psychologist or doctor instead of playing one from the classroom... hahaha... if they were as smart as they pretend they'd have a better job than where they ended up in life
