Hummingbird Food?

Do you buy or make hummingbird food?

My MIL used to make food, I think she boiled sugar and water together? (She passed away, so I don't know exactly how she did it.) She also added red food coloring, but she had clear feeders, mine is blue glass; would I still add the coloring?

Any help is much appreciated, I'm new at this bird feeding thing.

  • I usually buy but after reading this I think I'll be making it.

    Perfect Hummer Food Recipe

"Adding red food-dye coloring is unnecessary. The red on a feeder is enough to attract hummers. DO NOT USE HONEY as this can kill hummingbirds."

  • 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water. You don't need the food coloring.

  • My step-dad still does make his and if I remember right he didn't boil it or add food coloring but our feeder was red anyway. I wouldn't add the food coloring since yours is already colored.

  • I've never made it but I know hummingbirds are attracted to the color red. That's why your MIL added the red coloring. Not sure how attracted they are to blue. Most commercial hummingbird food I've seen is red. You might want to get a clear feeder.
