Should you say "Merry Christmas" or Happy Holidays"?

Which is it ladies? Is it more PC to say "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas"?

Okay, I know, I know - its a slow night, give me a break.

  • Personally I say Merry Christmas, simply out of a lifetime habit, but also because a few times when I have said Happy Holidays and the person I was greeting turned out to be a rabid fundamental Christian who thought it was her God-given duty to teach me the error of my "heathen ways" and inform me (incorrectly, as it happens) that the holiday was because Jesus Christ was born that day and for no other reason, blah, blah, blah.....
No one of a non-Christian faith has ever taken umbrage at a cheery Christmas greeting, and if they make any reference to a difference of faith it will be something gently like a Happy Hanukkah or Yule Blessings in return to a "Merry Christmas".

  • Personally, I don't take offense to either one. But, I usually say Happy Holidays...I don't want to say Merry Christmas to a person of Jewish faith. You know? I think its just safer to say Happy Holidays.

  • I usually say Happy Holidays, or wait to see what the other person says to me first. LOL.

  • I have a habit of saying Merry Christmas as well, but when I worked retail during the holidays last year, we were strictly instructed to say Happy Holidays.

    It felt...weird : /

  • I say Merry Christmas.....why would it offend anyone when you're wishing them well? If they don't believe in Christmas, they can just smile and say thank you.
