Looking for the best non-profit grant sites.

I am thinking of starting a non-profit for single mothers. And am wondering what the best sites. To research grant opportunities. I currently reside in Oakland ca.

  • Honestly? My suggestion is that you spend some time working with existing non-profits to understand how they are run---their staffing, their budgets, etc. Without all of that knowledge, you'll have a hard time writing a fundable proposal.

  • Before you even attempt to seek funding, you need to write a business plan and a marketing plan. You'll use those things to determine how much funding you'll need. Talk to some people at SCORE. Their advice is free and very helpful. Lastly, it is very difficult to get a government grant. They only give them out for certain types of businesses/charities and you have to fill out a lot of paperwork and wait to be approved. Don't apply for one until you have legal made your organization a non-profit.
