  • I grew up in Sacramento. I still work in that town. It's a lovely river town and has some great suburban enclaves, but you have to like the summer heat and dank winters (same for many cities on this list). Plus it's a great location if you enjoy both skiing and surf (we do), as you are a mere 1.5 hours from either. However, hands down, I prefer coastal living over the valley.

Different weather and different attitudes abound- (the valley is republican land)

  • Lived just south of #19 for a while. I didn't find it miserable, maybe times have changed (in the last 5 years). Jacksonville seemed to have a lot going for it. oh well. I don't live there now so all is good.

  • I live in Miami, and it is still paradise to me, the area where I live still has houses in the millions, although prices have gone down a bit but not enough to have any effect on mine or the area.

  • Not my city, not my state- I LOVE Colorado!!!
But I did grow up in DC and I can attest-it is currently one miserable place- loved it as a kid, then it hit the skids- I hate going back and fighting traffic and seeing what has happened to it ;(
