  • You may want to look into taking a pill to help you sleep or relax. Most international flights have TVs in the headrests, and supply little pillows and blankets. But the pillow (and seats) are not comfortable to sleep in. You might want to bring a snack (or buy one right before the flight), some things to keep you busy (books are great). Keep your passport safe but readily accessable. Also, tell 1 or 2 family members/friends about your itinerary and lodging just in case, and check in with them when you land so they know you landed safely.

  • Pack most of your toiletries in your luggage - when they say it has to fit in a quart sized bag, it has to fit and be able to close. When they say no more than this many oz - that means the original bottle has to be that many oz - not that it's only got about that much left. Also - things like liquid foundation, perfume, etc - all that counts as part of what has to fit in the quart sized bag. So put as much as you can in your luggage.

Put all the liquid or "spillable" things that are in your checked luggage in ziplocs in case they break or leak with the change in pressure.

Get some really gaudy ribbon or yarn or something and tie a piece of it to your luggage. You would be surprised at how many bags are going to look like yours at the luggage claim. It helps you spot your stuff faster, and helps prevent others from grabbing by mistake.

    Enjoy your trip :-)

  • We went to the Riviera Maya a few years back...LOVED IT! Anything worth anything to you, put in your carry on. They DO go through your luggage, and they'll leave a note saying they did, but they pretty much throw your stuff back in, so yes, put things in zip lock baggies. I even put my underwear in a baggie, b/c i didn't want someone rummaging through mine. And script medicines, need to be in their original containers. and if you take any OTC pills, leave them in the original container too, or they can confisgate them as an unknown substance. Don't put the locks on your luggage for the flight, b/c if they want to/"need to" check it, they will cut the locks off, and they have the right to. There are websites you can go to and read all the policies for whatever airlines and international flights you take. Make sure your within their wieght limits, b/c they can either charge you more, OR refuse your luggage on the flight.

  • "Get some really gaudy ribbon or yarn or something and tie a piece of it to your luggage"...YES!

also, when you get to the hotel, don't use the hotels safe, and most of the rooms have a safe in them, don't use them. Most of the hotels have a master skeleton key that housekeeping has to carry. Put your valuables in one of your luggage and lock it every time you leave the room. My sister was a travel agent and she has been all over, has learned a lot that help us travel!

And if you can leave a little room in your carry on and luggage for souveniers (sp?). If you want to pm, depending on where your going (hotel/resort) i can give you some more information on it.

  • How exciting for you!!!

Pack the most important things in your carry-on---passport, credit cards, maps, reservation information, change of clothes, iPod, laptop, etc. Imagine that your suitcase gets lost and you have to live off of your carry-on.

Pack liquid toiletries in your suitcase, but keep a hairbrush and toothbrush in your carry-on.

Pack whatever medications you might need in case of fever, flu, GI illness, migraines, or allergies. You do NOT want to be stuck in a foreign country with a flu and no medicine!!

Make photocopies of your passport and other important travel documents in case the real ones are lost or stolen. Scan copies and email them to yourself so they are accessible at any point during the trip.

Recognize that not all countries are as "efficient" as the U.S., and that it often takes longer to get anywhere or receive service of any kind.
