  • The active ingredient of this 100-year-old patent medication, first developed to fight the symptoms of a debilitating kind of diarrhea in children called cholera infantum, is now known to be a compound of the element bismuth called bismuth subsalicylate. (The original formula of the forerunner of Pepto-Bismol, which is now made by Procter & Gamble, also contained pepsin, zinc salts, salol -- a compound related to aspirin -- and oil of wintergreen, along with the familiar pink coloration.)

  • Bismuth has antidiarrheal, antibacterial and antacid effects in the digestive tract. When a small amount of bismuth combines with trace amounts of sulfur in saliva and the gastrointestinal tract, a black-colored substance called bismuth sulfide is formed. The discoloration can last for several days.

A black tongue is a harmless side effect, and is so listed in the product's package information
