  • Yes, thickening his liquids can help with aspiration pneumonia, but if it isn't enough & he continues to aspirate his liquids, then you may need to consider other options, such as medications (to reduce or stop the reflux or to move food through the stomach faster), sugery (to change the anatomy of the stomach to prevent severe reflux - nissen fundoplication) or the insertion of nasojejunal or jenjunostomy tube to completely bypass the stomach & put liquids directly into the jejunum, which is the upper portion of the small intestine, to prevent reflux of liquids. Also, while on thickened liquids, if yours son has some swallowing issues, then he should be receiving therapy from either a qualified speech language pathologist or occupational therapist that specializes in feeding issues.

  • Sounds like he may be aspirating his reflux (which could be causing the pneumonias). Is your son on any medications? What testing has he had? You may need to seek out a new pediatric GI for a second opinion if your son's current GI is not being proactive enough.

  • Was he a preemie? I would see a new dr until you get results you are comfortable with. Maybe allergies? Sometimes even feeding in little doses, inclined, almost sitting upright helps keep it down too. Trust ur mommy gut! No one knows your baby better than you do! xo

  • has he had a full panel of allergy tests done? been scoped? if the diagnosis you got doesn't feel right, time for a new pediatrician and specialists.
