Eek! My 6 month old just ate honey!

I didn't see his sister's honey-covered bread when I set him down and he grabbed it and took a bite out of it. He gagged and spit up some... I don't know if he actually got any down or not.

What should I do?

  • Watch him. Look for signs of botulism over the next few days (usually takes at least 3 days to show up in a baby). But if you see any signs, call the dr immediately. You may want to go ahead and call your ped and see what they say, but the risk is relatively low. Don't know how old your baby is, but before 6 months is when they are most susceptible to botulism from honey.

  • He'll be OK.

  • if he hasn't had a reaction yet, he's fine. the botulism spores are not in all honey, but it's in some so that's why they tell you not until they're 1yo

  • Not giving honey to infant/babies is not allergic reactions... it can actually retard them! WebMD, call advice nurse, or doctor

  • yeah, I saw it after I had hit the post answer button - sorry!

  • Lol, it's okay, I was just poking fun :p

The pediatrician said not to worry, that he would be okay. I will still keep a close eye out for signs of botulism.

    Thanks, everyone!
