Gum + very bumpy plane ride + young kids

going on a commuter flight tomorrow w/ my kids 6 and 4 1/2 and it's only like 45 minutes but it's INSANELY bumpy. I am feeling the urge to give them gum to prevent ear popping but in the back of my crazy mind I'm imagining them choking. thoughts?
