  • Find a college that offers that type of degree or certification.

  • The guidance counselors at my daughter's high school have bachelor degrees in teaching, and masters degrees in counseling.

There are many certificate programs to become a certified life coach; most of them are fairly worthless

  • I'm in school right now to become a school counselor (aka guidance counselor). You have to haev a Bachelors degree (doesn't have to be in teaching or education, mine's in psychology, it can really be in anything). That will take about 3 1/2 to 4 years. Then you join a Master's program to do school counseling. The masters program is about 2 years (plus the 4 for bachelors) so you're looking at 6 years of college.

  • funny you ask, im in a introduction to counseling class and one of our homework assignments was to research one state per each student the requirements of what it takes. we found that each state is absolutely different so it depends where you live. i learned the average number of hours of field work on top of gaining the license is about 1,000 hours. so look it up on google, then go to the school site you may want to attend. its a great career, i was thinking of possibly doing that myself at some point. so start volunteering in "supervised field work"asap!
