What level should my 8yr old be reading at?

I have a large collection of books and my 8 year old is reading me books all the time. What level should he be reading at 8 yrs old?

  • You could always ask your son's teacher what level he should be reading at. My son turned 7 this past Oct, is in the middle of the Percy Jackson series, and is reading at a high 5th grade reading level. I don't think I'm the BEST person for the "average" meter.

Lexile has a measurment system for rating books. You can enter in books that he is currently reading, or have just recently read to see where he's at. Scholastic has a similar tool as well.

  • A "just right" book is one that he can easily read 9 out of 10 words.
