At what age do you put a kid in a toddler bed... and take them out of it?

  • I heard somewhere that you need to put your child in a toddler bed when the reach 35 inches. I think that is what I heard. I put my older son in a toddler bed when he was about 3. He got a twin bed when he was 5, I think.

  • IN: When they climb out of their crib in their own.
OUT: When they're too big for it.

Or skip the middleman and go straight from a crib to a twin bed.

  • DD went into a twin bed at 16 months, and ds at 18months. I see no reason for a toddler bed, it seems like a waste of time

  • My DD went into a toddler bed at age 18 months, and is still in it at age 4.5. The bed holds a child up to 50 lbs. We'll be getting bunk beds when she is 5, and DS is out of his crib.

  • In: At 18 months she was trying to climb INTO her crib. If I would have had the room, she would have went straight to a twin or full size.

Toddler beds are really not needed. A twin or full size bed with a bed rail will do just fine and will save you the money of buying one later.

  • My older two never had a twin bed. I just ordered one for the baby however. She co-sleeps in my room, but when she reaches 1 this summer, I would like to give her a place to nap while I am doing housework. We just got a new place and today I am going to start working on painting and setting up her new room. Even though she co-sleeps with me, I want to get the room ready for her to move into when it is time and she won't be ready for a twin bed at that time.
