  • They say they are dating by middle school but its more of hanging around each other at school and what not. By 9th grade my kids all had casual bf/gf's and depending on the maturity level I would allow them to go out on group "dates". Mostly it was around 10 kids or so going to the movies together and us moms took turns picking/dropping them off. As for a serious dating mine were around 16-17 before they got serious bf/gfs or their first real loves.

  • Our boys can date at 16.... They have to earn our trust, and be respectful of the rules of the girls parents.. She must also be 16, because he will NOT be taking out a younger girl. I don't think a 13/14 yr old girl should be out running around without her parents at that age... If he happens to like a girl that's 15 yrs old, then they would only be allowed to spend time at either family's home, not out on the town.. It's a rule my parents used, and one we will as well.

  • I was 16. Having a license was a big deal to my mom. I could date a year younger or older.

  • I've never enforced a rule on dating, but spent a lot of time talking to my boys about relationships and the importance of not getting emotionally invested or to feel that having a girlfriend in school was important. That they should focus on their school, sports and friends and enjoy themselves without drama.
My oldest had the casual "girlfriend" around 5th grade, where they just hung out at school. By 7th grade the kids all went out as a group and there were bf/gf relationships. He is a sophomore and has his friend "real" girlfriend now, it took him 3 months to get to know her before he even asked her to be his gf and they don't spend very much time together, but he told me this weekend he just enjoys her company, they get along well. They spend one night a week together at my house watching movies and occassionally attend a school event together. Neither are obsessive which is nice.
