What do you think this could be?

my dog keeps diggin at his one ear and whining and when i touch it he yelps,so i took a qtip with alcohol on it and cleaned the ear out of course there was blood on the qtip after i assume from him diggin at it. is this ear mites or does it sound like he might have an ear infection?

  • That sounds like an ear infection, more than it sounds like mites. You really need to get it taken care of because if it starts bothering him too much, he will start shaking his head and could possibly suffer an ear hematoma. A hematoma is a real pain in the butt, it requires surgery, and they are often likely to reoccur once they get one. It is basically a broken blood vessel in the ear flap from the shaking. The ear will fill up like a balloon and need to be trained and stitched up. So trust me, take him in, get the meds and be done. ANY vet can treat an ear infection, if yours is booked take him elsewhere. Also, the longer you wait, the more sore it becomes and difficult to medicate.

Sorry! Ear infections are a pain! GOOD luck!

  • Yes it could hurt him. Human grade stuff isn't made for dogs. It's potentially dangerous.

Call the vet and ask them to see him. If he has an ear infection it can get bad very quickly.

  • It could be either, but either way you need to go to the vet. Mites is easily treatable with the right medication. An ear infection still needs medication of its own. Call the vet and see if you need to bring the dog in.

  • Does it smell? NO VICKS... bad bad bad. He needs a vet and they will give him drops.

  • Could be an infection - especially if it's just one ear.

  • this sounds silly but i thought about putting a little vicks inside the ear incase it is an infection. i mean thats what i do with my kids and it helps if they have an earache. could that possibly hurt the animal though?

  • You've gotten good advice. Please don't home medicate without atleast speaking to the vet. They will most likely want you to come in so they can check the ear and prescribe antibiotics if neccessary.
