For those who know the Bible...

Does it say in the Bible that the Bride's family pays for the wedding or is it just tradition that things are that way?

If it does say so in the Bible can someone tell me the scripture?

  • I'd go with tradition...
"If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife." That's from exodus 22:16, and seems to say exactly the opposite of what your dad said.

  • this is not a biblical thing, only a tradition.

  • That is just a cultural tradition. But, ask him where it says it in the bible.

  • If he pushes the issue, ask him to show you the scripture. I am 99% certain that it is not a biblical issue.

  • Ruth's family couldn't afford a wedding, Esther's either (of course she married a wealthy king). Abigail had money but I assume David (soon to be King) paid. I haven't looked it up, but perhaps it is from tradition. My dad didn't pay for ours. My husband (the groom) did.

  • I thought so but my dad, who's a preacher, talks as if it's Biblical
