in your state how old does your child have to be to start kindergarten? In IL it is 5.

  • I think it's 5 also in Missouri but my little brother skipped preschool completely and went to Kindergarten at 4.

  • I think you'll find in most states is 5 - sort of. The issue is where the cut-off falls. That is even going to vary by district not just by state.

    In NJ, for example, the state cut-off is 5 before December 31st. However, that guideline is just the "no later than date." Districts are free to set cut-off dates earlier than that if they elect to do so. My district is 5 by October 1st. My DD did start K the year she turned 5. Class started on Sept 3rd. She turned 5 on Sept 12th. Technically she started K *at* 4 years old...even if it was just for 9 days.

  • In KY, I think that they have to turn 5 by October 1. Not sure though.
