Wine pairing with sweets?

As in a previous post I asked what desserts to make for a birthday gathering...do you have any suggestions as far as a wine to pair with them? I'm not a wine connoisseur but would like to have some on hand that is generally well liked.

  • Depends on the dessert in question. You want to make sure the dessert isn't sweeter than the wine otherwise the wine will taste sour. Chocolate? Think Port. Fruit? Try a sweet Muscat. A spatelaese Reisling is a good choice with custards and fruit too. Anything further than that would have to wait until I get home as my copy of What to Eat With What You Drink (awesome book!) is there and not in my classroom. lol

  • The link shows a good article.  Some of these wines are expensive but it at least discusses the different types.  I have had muscato and it is heavenly.

  • Champagne. This is a great, low cost option:  http://www.gruetwinery.com/_product_46659/Gruet_Blanc_de_Noirs
