How long should it for my anti depressant to take full effect?

I jus started them and am wondering how long it should take to see the full results?

  • It might help if you said what kind. There are different drug classes, which reach steady state levels at different times.

  • I am on Cymbalta, and while mine took effect after a few days(it's a combination SSRI and SNRI), I didn't feel the full effects until a couple months in. It's the same when you up your dosage as well. This is my third different med, and we just upped it about a month ago. Sometimes it can even take up to 3 months to feel the effects of antidepressants, according to my doc, but most of the time it's 6-8 weeks before there's much improvement.

  • I was on Paxil for a couple of years and after the death of my son i needed something more. The doctor put me on Effexor it usually takes a couple of weeks for it to take it's full effect.

  • It really does depend on WHAT medication. While most will provide some changes within a few days to a few weeks, full effects can take up to a few months.
